Decorated with red and white dots over black background . This mask comes from the Senufo people from the West African nation of Ivory Coast. Senufo is a term created by French colonists. The 2,500,000 people known as the Senufo actually consist of many different tribes, who speak many different languages, and who do not share the same beliefs or artistic values. It is difficult to know from which tribe this mask comes, but it was likely used in a secret society know as Poro in the central and southern Senufo, or Komo in the northern Senufo. Becoming a member of one of these societies requires initiation. Usually only men were allowed to be members and to witness the ceremonies, but there are special circumstances in which women can also become members. When a person wears a mask such as this one, he is thought to become the spirit in order to fight witches, protect the vilalge and helps solve people's problems. It is common for these masks to have buffalo horns and a mouth full of teeth, which emphasize the strange nature of the spirit. This mask does not represent a particular animal, but all dangerous wild animals in general. Red, orange, and yellow are common colors used for these masks. The cup on the top of the mask is possibly used to hold special magical concoctions. -- Ana Bisaillon '12 ", "Dedication" : "Bates College Museum of Art purchase, 2011.24.1", "Copyright_Type" : "", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "", "Creation_Place2" : "Côte d'Ivoire", "Department" : "", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2011.24.1.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2011.24.1.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2011.24.1.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2011.24.1.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "3138", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 6626, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/6626", "Disp_Access_No" : "2017.1.151", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "n.d.", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "0", "_Disp_End_Date" : "0", "Disp_Title" : "Cache-sexe", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Kirdi", "Sort_Artist" : "Kirdi", "Disp_Dimen" : "8 1/4 x 17 1/4 in. The significance of beans is a controversy. The beans might have been important in warfare, conveying messages and aiding military decision-making, or valuable for predicting agricultural fertility. Runners carried the beans in ritual races delivering them to priests for interpretation. The practice, possibly passed down through time, is comparable to palmistry or tea leaf reading. The heads of the bean figures match the heads of the runners on other vessels. The mode of representation is abstract and schematic. Notice the single line, like shorthand, indicating the ground. As well, the most easily identified aspect is shown - the side or front. There is no perspective or space and the size of things depicted depends on the space available. For what, if utilitarian or ceremonial, could this vessel have been used? Unlike many of the other vessels of this period, this piece has a very simple design and a significant amount of undecorated space. [What is called the Juan Pablo Style has similar designs. The Jan Pablo Style is from between the foot of Cerro Teojate and western bank of the Ica. Few remains. The style is conservative remaining faithful to Formative period traditions. It is the most Chavinoid of Early Paracas, but emphasizes non-Chavinoid. Depictions of the fox, vencejo, feline and falcon. The melon-shaped bottles here are decorated more. The lute boat is similar to this form, but this vessel would have to be a gross stylization of the water craft. Paracas is often divided into Necropolis or Cavernas.
