[Woman in German Peasant Dress, Hat and Apron]
ca. 1933-1934
Marsden Hartley,
American,
(Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)
Notes
In 1933-34 Hartley spent about 18 months in the Bavarian Alps in Germany, mainly drawing and painting the mountains in the areas surrounding Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Among the photographs collected by Hartley in the Memorial Collection are four that depict actors in a theatrical production he saw at the time, with actors in peasant costumes similar to this drawing. No doubt some of the women in the region would have still been wearing traditional dress as depicted by Hartley. Norma Berger, Hartley's niece, once owned a pencil sketch of this same composition, which is now lost.
