Roundel with Central Bird and Abstract Designs

3rd-7th century CE
Early Byzantine Egypt

Bird at center of roundel is a common pattern in the decorative arts. For Coptic textiles see Maguire as above in 1951.2.75a, item A8, p. 49, cut from garment in similar form with remaining margin. (This collection, now at Queens College, has similar connections to collecting of Kelekian. See also Hoskins (as Above), plate 16, for use of birds in textile ornamentation. - Rebecca Corrie, August 12, 2020
