[Preliminary drawing for Down East Young Blades]

ca.1940
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
This is a preliminary drawing for the painting, Down East Young Blades, 1940 (Hartford Athenaeum). It is speculated that the central figure in this drawing is Hartley himself, flanked by two young men, the "Down East Young Blades" that are the character types in this painting as well as Lobster Fishermen, 1940-41 (Metropolitan Museum of Art) ) of the local fishermen Hartley met and befriended during the three years he lived in Corea, the fishing village on Maine's Down East coast.
