Down East Young Lobstermen [Study for Down East Young Blades]

1940
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
This study and the previous drawing (1955.1.83) are preparatory sketches for the oil painting, Down East Young Blades (Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford CT), with, presumably, a portrait Hartley himself at center. This study includes a torso sketch of the central figure, but also a more fully realized view of the young man to the left. Here, Hartley uses shading to give volume to the arms and sleeves and flared pants. Also, the trim on his cap and belt, his facial features and curly hair, and the tight necklace with a heart pendant are clearly delineated details.
