[Sketch of a Man, Head and Shoulders]

ca. 1938-1941
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
As with several other drawings formerly grouped as works from Berlin 1922-23, there is no clear evidence of that date and place of execution for this sketch. The man's thick head of hair aligns more closely with male figures done late in Hartley's career, so, like the pencil sketches of three heads (1955.1.4), this pen and ink drawing is more likely a figure study from the last few years of the artist's life.
