[Landscape with Wooded Road with Gate]

1927
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
This work is one of the finest in the Chateau Noir series, exhibiting Hartley's masterful alliance of the graphic medium and subject. The foreground path leads the viewer from warm sunlight, through the gate, and, framed by one tree at left and three at right, into the cool woods in the background. The artist uses a skilled variety of pencil strokes: sharply delineated contour lines of the foreground road and tree trunks, pressed heavily or with repeated strokes; loose swirls, dashes, and dots for foreground vegetation; thick lines, together with diagonal hatching and rubbing for the gate, lamps, and wall; single curved lines, together with broad (sided edge of the pencil) diagonal shading to suggest in simplest terms the canopy of trees.
