Mt. Katahdin No. 4

Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Compared to the ink drawing (MHMC 1955.1.50), Hartley has altered the perspective of the mountain, making its shape less pointed, broadening its base, and pulling its mass further to the picture plane. He also shifted the tallest pine tree to the right and deemphasized the distant ridges. With the crayon medium and less bare paper (as in MHMC 2014.14.1), comes added weight and density that enhances its grandeur.

Like many of the other Mt. Katahdin drawings (including MHMC 2014.4.1), this one came from a sketch/notebook with two sets of holes at u.l. and u.r.
