Both men are preliminary sketches for figures that later take their place in two different paintings. The figure on the right might be Hartley's initial sketch, a pose developed more fully in MHMC 1955.1.64, and eventually becoming the lifeguard in the painting of that title. The man on the left of this drawing becomes the figure in the background of On the Beach.
