Unknown Artist

Sarkis Katchadourian was an Armenian painter who was born in Turkey and died in Paris (1886-1947). He lived in New York beginning in 1941 and was one of the artists who frequented the Kelekian Gallery at Madison and 57th street, according to Nanette Kelekian (telephone conversation May 16, 2020). (She commented that there was a group including a Latvian painter named Arbet Blackhouse who had studios near the gallery but between 5th and 6th Avenues that used to meet in early afternoons at the Russian Tearoom.) Katchadourian studied in Rome, Paris, and Munich, between 1912 and 1914 and so might have met Hartley at that earlier time, but he was certainly in New York at the same time as Hartley when Hartley was meeting with Kelekian who was collecting Hartley’s work. Katchadourian was a founder of various societies of Armenian artists. He was close to the circles frequented by Dikran Kelekian and Arthur Upham Pope, specialist in Persian art of antiquity and the modern era. Pope organized the exhibition of Katchadourian’s work at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932, which featured copies of Safavid wall paintings.
