Slab Figurine Fragment

500-1521
Unknown Artist (Jalisco?)

Notes
This style of figurine, usually rendering females, is found throughout the central highlands including West Mexico where the female figurine tradition was prevalent for 1500 years. The flattened headdress and perhaps hair framing the face is typical of Aztec figurines of the Post-Classic period (1300-1521 CE) although similar slab figurines portraying women have been excavated at sites on the Jalisco coast dating to as early at 500 CE.
