For this drawing. Three of Hartley's 1931 series of Dogtown oil paintings contain the motif of a road cutting across the boulder-strewn landscape: Summer En Route, Dogtown (Private Collection, Boston, MA courtesy of Jonathan Boos Gallery); Blueberry Highway, Dogtown (High Museum, Atlanta); Summer Outward Bound, Dogtown (Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester MA). This drawing in the MHMC and another like it (High Museum, Atlanta) are studies for the finished paintings.
