As with MHMC 2012.23.1, Hartley presents here a broad, rounded perspective of Katahdin, while still emphasizing the sharpness of the jagged peak, at the same time reducing the role played by the foreground elements of lake and tree. He used the side edge of the lithographic crayon to articulate with suffused strokes the declivities of the mountain ridges, activating the bare paper as a coequal partner in defining the mountain's shape.
