One can imagine that Hartley had to execute this sketch quickly since the man would not have remained long in this deeply kneeling position. With a few rapid pencil marks he captures the weight of the body on the strong legs, head tilted down and arms leaning on things—the curving muscular forms of the man's back, shoulders, arms, and thighs, though contracted into this slightly awkward attitude, nevertheless conveying a rhythmic grace.
