Like the two previous sketches of a seated woman with a cat (1944.1.12 and 1955.1.13), this drawing belongs with Hartley's late figurative works, rather than with the 1922-23 as previously thought. The sharp-angled profiles and arms angled inward—as well as the theme of a pet on a lap—align this drawing with those of the 1939-43 period.
