[Forest Glade]

ca. 1935-1936
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
Having immersed himself for several years (1927-29) in the methods of C'ezanne, Hartley was becoming increasingly skilled at landscape composition. Here in this scene of a forest glade, Hartley plays with open and closed spatial experience. The tallest trees at left and right set the stage. We are beckoned in via the narrow opening at center, yet the circle of trees surrounding the glade hems us in once we're there. The sky above, however, allows another opening.
