[Still Life Flowers]

Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

In addition to emulating him in the landscape drawings of the Chateau Noir region, Hartley created a number of still life drawings and watercolors that drew on similar lessons he learned from C├ęzanne and that influenced his subsequent still life paintings, which radically changed in the years following his sojourn in Aix-en-Provence, evolving from the dark, earth-colored and complex still lifes he did in Germany and Paris from 1924-26 to the floral motifs he embarked on in 1928, executed with a bright, saturated palette.
