Bacchic grove with dancers, animals and fish

3rd-7th century CE
Early Byzantine Egypt

Notes
For full citations see page for object accession number 1951.2.75.a. Comparable example of small-figure Bacchic grove is Woodfin (at Queens College), p. 8, fig. 3, also shown in multiple details in Maguire, as B.6 and B7, pp. 100-103, although with wav e rather than the twist border seen in the Bates examples. Woodfin dates the fragment as 4th to 7th century. Unusual consistency with t confirms that they were originally part of same object. - Rebecca Corrie, August 24, 2020
