[Standing Male Figure (front view, hands behind hips)]

1940
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
Using scratchy, repeated lines, the artist captures the essence of this muscleman's physique, with its sensuous, slight contrapposto curve of hips and torso. At the same time, Hartley disregards anatomical accuracy (common among his Old Orchard Beach figure studies) in the bulkier left shoulder and unnaturally elongated left arm. This figure, with his thick head of hair, emphasized by dark, heavily drawn lines, is, perhaps a precursor to the three later paintings of Madawaska boxers.
