3rd-7th century CE
Early Byzantine Egypt

Notes
For full citations see page for object accession number 1951.2.75.a. Comparable fragments with running animals on red or reddish ground include: Carroll, pp. 140, 146-148, objects 43 and 44, dated to the 7th century and the 9th to 10th century CE. See also Hoskins, plate 16, red strip with wave pattern and row of alternating ducks and diamonds, pp. 73-75, object 83.7-12. This one is from the Gayet album and has a matching piece in the Louvre, suggesting an Antinoé findspot. - Rebecca Corrie, August 24, 2020
