[Figure Study for The Lifeguard]

1940
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
Hartley has isolated the man with his back to the viewer and made him into a character the 1940 oil painting, The Lifeguard where we see him on the right (yellow bathing suit) among the seated figures on the sandy beach behind the lifeguard, all looking out at the ocean—making up one of Hartley's most strikingly original figure compositions.
