[Still Life Flowers]

1927
Marsden Hartley, American, (Lewiston, ME, January 4, 1877 - September 2, 1943, Ellsworth, ME)

Notes
In addition to emulating him in the landscape drawings of the Chateau Noir region, Hartley created a number of still life drawings and watercolors that drew on similar lessons he learned from Cézanne and that influenced his subsequent still life paintings, which radically changed in the years following his sojourn in Aix-en-Provence, evolving from the dark, earth-colored and complex still lifes he did in Germany and Paris from 1924-26 to the floral motifs he embarked on in 1928, executed with a bright, saturated palette.
